China announced surprising and inconceivable news on Monday. China announced that they have made the world’s fastest computer ever in simple words they made a brand new supercomputer. As we know that in the field of technology every country preferred American technology to solve their problems and develop new technologies. But at the first time in history china has proved that there is another way to create and make new things by introducing their new super computer. They made their computer chip using their own resources and technologies without the help of American chips. China is always been good at replication and stealing the intellectual properties but it has infrequently developed “indigenous innovation,” especially in the high-tech zone. Now the total numbers of supercomputers in China are 167 and the USA has 165 computers.
The name of Chinese supercomputer is the Tianhe-2 was created by the Sunway TaihuLight at the National Supercomputer Center in Wuxi, China was ranked as the world’s fastest supercomputer on aTop500 list. This supercomputer consists of 16,000 nodes and every node has two processors of Intel Ivy Bridge Xeon and three co-processors chips. The total counting of processors and co-processors are 3120000 cores and the memory possessed by each 16,000 nodes is 88 GB. The total memory of CPU’s and co-processors is 1375 Tib. The energy consumption of this computer itself is 17.5 megawatts and if we include the consumption of cooling system then the total power dissipation is 24 megawatts.
This computer can perform 2.5 thousand trillion operations in a second and the weight of processor of this computer is 150 tons. If we talk about its calculation speed then it can perform 93,000 thousand trillion calculations per second. In comparison with the American supercomputer, it is 30 percent or five times faster than the American computer. The theoretical peak performance of this computer is 125 petabytes, have 10,649,600 cores and 1.31 petabytes of Random Access Memory. It is the first time a world’s fastest computer uses Chinese microprocessor chips instead of chips from Silicon Valley’s Intel’s.
Purpose: NUDT said that the Tianhe-2 would have been used for simulation, analysis, and government security application purposes.
Cost: The total cost spend on this supercomputer is 2.4 billion Yuan (US$390 million).
China’s Tianhe-1A which is the previous faster supercomputer of the world was made by using the US-made Intel processors. There was a plan to upgrade the Tianhe-1A last year, but the American government placed a ban on all high-performance computing chips by claiming that the Chinese Tianhe-1A was used in a nuclear explosion activities.
